"Of all forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. We are all vulnerable to health care error; regardless of our age, gender, race or income level. Healthcare error happens at the best facilities, even with the finest doctors. As documented by the Institute of Medicine's 1999 report, "To Err is Human" healthcare error is responsible for tens of thousands of patient deaths each year. When it happens to the one you love, or you yourself have been seriously harmed, it can be devastating. It is necessary as Patients and Consumers that we become our own healthcare advocates, for ourselves and those that we love. By becoming active partners in our healthcare, we can reduce the chance of becoming an error statistic. Healthcare providers, institutions, consumers and patients need to work collectively advocating for quality, safe healthcare to prevent the tragedy of healthcare error.
" A Voice for Patients "
has been designed to educate patients and consumers
(potential users of the healthcare system) on the national epidemic of healthcare error. The site
offers informative on-line resources for consumers; including an extensive list
of disease specific organizations offering support and education for patients
and their families, as well as resources that enable consumers to research
medical conditions and browse on-line medical dictionaries. These resources are
not a substitute for the expertise of trained clinicians.
This site is a VOICE for PATIENTS and CONSUMERS Voice4Patients encourages Health Care Partnerships between Providers and Patients. We do not offer legal advice or medical referrals. We are not a professional organization. The stories and suggestions are from consumers themselves. Where appropriate, they have been complemented by members of both the medical and legal communities. It is dedicated in memory of those who's lives have been claimed by health care error, and to those who live with the lingering physical and emotional affects of error. The site, and the individuals who have contributed to its context, acknowledge with gratitude the advocates in healthcare and government who are committed to ensuring that the only acceptable standard of care is High Quality, Safe Care. My advocacy, my voice, is in remembrance of my father. Becky Martins |
